Holy Isle Challenge 2024
13th of July, 12.00

Arran Kayak Club supported by Otter’s Tail are running a paddle sports challenge on Arran on the 13th of July this year.

The 11km route starts in Lamlash and will take participants round the Holy Isle. The race starts at 12.00, permitting travel from the mainland in the morning, and is open to all seaworthy craft including SUP’s. You could make it a day trip or make a holiday of it and enjoy even more of the island of Arran.

The ethos is for a fun day out and, whilst there will be a race element to the day, the emphasis will be on everyone safely completing the challenge. The event is open to all aged fourteen and over in single person craft and over tens in double boats. It is a family friendly event, but all participants should be comfortable in winds up to force four.

After a 2km crossing the route will take you around Holy Isle where you will see fascinating rock formations and abundant wildlife. Holy Isle, which is a Buddhist retreat, is home to feral Eriskay ponies, Sameen goats and Soay sheep as well as abundant marine and bird life.

The course has been run for the last six years, with a record time of 1 hour and 1 minutes, but the emphasis is on a fun day out with safety cover provided by ribs from Arran yacht Club
Entry is online – please log onto the events and courses page on the SCA website and look up ocean racing

Kayaks will be available for hire for suitably experienced paddlers.

Festival of the Sea
Lamlash 11 Aug 2024
The aim is to celebrate everything that the sea means for an Island community: livelihood, leisure, ships, boats, swimming, sea-life, nourishment, and even transport. It blends thanksgiving, awareness of the damage we have done to the sea and its ecology, our dependence upon our Good Mother Earth, and the acts of penitence and intercession. The ancient Gaelic heritage of our lands and islands came alive in the recitation of the prayers of Blessing handed down to us both orally and in Carmichael’s Carmina Gadelica, calling us to renew our ecological awareness along with our sense of wonder.
